Got a fourth GP9 Santa Fe locomotive to make a proper train. There would be 10 of these are so to pull a train over the Cajon Pass but four is plenty for HO. This is a nice a shiny one and the newer locomotives go in front.
The GP9 was one of the most successful of the early diesel locomotives. It was a road switcher which means used on the mainline for hauling freight and switching. They are still used on excursion railroads, short lines and such. Not bad considering the last one was made in 1959. Of note is the high hood which limits visibility. Thus the fireman from the steam era had something to do as it took two to see. Plus it was a union thing.
This is one of my favorite locomotives. I have 4 Santa Fe, a Union Pacific and a Southern Pacific. Still more train stuff to come!

Are the handrails original? Look different to the ones I got in the late 70s

Thank you very much BHIFOS. Yes the handrails on the Athearn kits are unpainted.

Something I always wanted to collect but never made it there. Super locomotive treasure and a set of these would be over the top, very envious !~
