    Thorens Disc Music Box

    Approximately 8" x 6" x 3 1/2"
    Discs Approximately 4 1/2"
    Model: AD30?

This is the first time I had seen one of these and I was excited to have the chance to buy it.

It's a Swiss made music box by Thorens that has 10 metal discs that play different tunes. It runs off a clockwork mechanism that is powered by a key wind. It's very similar to a polyphon type player. It looks very similar to a modern record player. There's a gear that moves the record and an arm that holds the discs down as they play. There's also a pin in the center that locates the discs in the player. I looked at several of these online. I did not see another example that had the material inserts. Most just have an open player mounted in the box.

I need to take it apart and look inside. I think it needs some lube. The music box works but it's a hair out of tune and the start/stop switch does not always stop when selected.

    BEFORE RECORDED TIME
You may know of the name Thorens as a record player company. Starting 1883 in Ste Croix in the Swiss Jura, Hermann Thorens founded his company. The purpose of the company was to manufacture music boxes and musical works.

The box itself is interesting, but together with your discs the box provides that magic oomph !~

This is wonderful Dave!! I've seen a couple of larger ones in a shop, while on vacation, that had extremely high dollar price tags on them.

Phil - Thanks. The discs alone can sell for a couple hundred dollars. Having all those discs and the original boxes was pretty cool.

Scott - I was able to buy it super cheap. I've looked up some prices and they are pretty steep. Having tye discs makes a big price jump.

V33 - I figured you'd like the record player look and Thorens name. Wait till you see the box of 78s and albums I bought for super cheap too. Has Frank Sinatra to Kansas to Aerosmith to the Beetles and more.

I knew they would be expensive, the discs, just as a box I would have probably and most likely bought it as I love a lot of these cedar boxes !~
