I have acquired this unusual trunk, which was manufactured by H. G. Faber & Son in Utica, NY. The trunk measures approximately 31" x 38" x 14 1/2", and has a black bubbled coating which I believe is probably coal tar. There is a drop down tray in the lid which is accessed by a pull tab on the lid of the trunk.
The name stamped on the sides of the trunk say C.H. Hawkes and Son in Elmira, which is about 25 miles from where I live in the Corning, NY area. The Hawkes cut glass company was once centered in Corning, but this does not seem to be the initials of their owner. There is a handwritten (Victorian era?) shipping tag which also reads Hawkes, but also has different initials (see photos).
All sides of the trunk are in very good shape considering the age of the trunk, and both leather handles on the ends, as well as all four casters, are also in good condition. There are some worn areas on the surface, but not too many.
I am interested in any information about the trunk and possible history, etc., that you can offer me. I've never owned a trunk before, and this one seemed intriguing, considering its size, shape, condition, and ties to our local history. Thank you in advance!

I would suggest contacting your local historical society and see if they have any information on the names. I have found these places to be very helpful in the past.

Thank you, that's a good idea! I'm hoping I can get more information on the trunk itself, but being able to trace it's origin may really prove valuable. Thanks again!
