2 portraits (a man and a woman) by the Indonesian cartoonist Narko Hanjaya from 1982, made in Bali. The works on paper pasted on a sturdy surface measure 24 x 30 cm.
Narko Hanjaya was born in Solo, Central Java, 1956. He has been actively painting since 1979. He is a self-taught artist who continuously improved his skills by studying various paintings and by adopting techniques from his artist friends. He chose pencil and paper as his main medium to express his simple ideas. His sharp black pencil provides his objects with sunlight that emerges through technology in the drawings. His artwork is reminiscent of Ken Patern, a Canadian painter who is now very well known in Jakarta.
Using the simple medium of pencil and paper, Narko Hanjaya has captured Bali and Java's shadows and tones. Narko left for Bali in 1980. He learned the techniques of drawing and painting from his older brother, among others. Narko says that his talents were not recognized or recognized in his hometown.
"Here in Bali I can make a living from the work I create. I have a manager in Jakarta who sells abroad for me. It's hard to do that in Solo because few people are interested - there are few collectors , even in Yogyakarta".
His works "talk about the things that people see every day and don't think about them. But if these come back in my art, people are more likely to recognize these objects.
