Crescent No 56 Suregrip Nail Puller
Extends from 17 1/2" to 23"
This is a sliding nail puller. It features a cast iron body and forged upper. These tools were originally patented in 1902 by the Bridgeport Hardware Mfg. Co. (US Patent 708,841). And apparently it was a really popular design, because until recently they were still selling almost the exact same tool.
From what I understand Crescent bought out Bridgeport Hardware Mfg. Co? So you will see early ones with the Bridgeport name. This particular example is pretty early. My friend aquired this from her dad's tool box when he passed.
An interesting thread on the pullers..

That's a pretty interesting tool Dave!! First one I've ever seen.
Truly a thing of beauty, yet utilitarian.
Thanks Scott and Watchs.. I thought it had a good look too. It will look good with the garage art. And it was donated to me so can't beat that.
dav2no1, Thanks. :-)
Actually just googling the bare patent number with the comma in it (708,841) made it pop right up as the second hit on the first page of returns:

That is one handsome cast iron tool.
Thanks Kera! I added patent info in my other tool post too! I know you love them patents!
dav2no1, Apparently, I don't love patents enough: I need to read the dang listings.
I have seen these and thought it was a steel barrel opener lol
