Missouri National Guard St. Louis Battery A: Gold Medal.
This historic national guard artillery unit traces it's origins back to 1812 in a 27 page unit history by V. M. Porter of the Missouri Historical Society published in February of 1904. This unmarked medal is a minimum of 10 k gold and weighs 5.39 grams and is 23 mm in diameter. At 10 k this medal has .0722 ounce of pure gold. Multi-piece construction consists of a round disc with a red enameled obverse in a bezzel like strip of gold around the edge that is looped at the top and has partial length of chain. In the center of the enameled side is a high relief gold eagle perched on war trophies and the legend BATTERY “A” at the top and N G M at the bottom in what is known as the exergue. The reverse has fancy monogram above the date 1905. The size would indicate that this is some sort of souvenir issue, possibly a fob of some sort?
