Just acquired a WWII (U.S.) 57mm anti-tank gun brass shell case made into an ashtray. I've seen these referred to as “trench art,” and often with a center spire consisting of a rifle round/bullet. I'm not sure what my center spire is.

The case head reads, “57MM M23A2 LOT 000-1-16 1944,” and the push-in primer reads, “1944 M1B1A2 AOP 282.” There are no other markings.

It measures 3-1/2” in diameter, 3-7/8” in height, and weighs 1 lb 10 oz.

That center piece is called a 'flash tube'. When the primer charge is fired, this tube helps to ensure the propellant charge fires at an even rate and throughly..
