Civil War Era New York Gold Medal
New York National Guard 47th Infantry Regiment gold recruiting medal circa 1862. This unit was organized in Brooklyn, NY July-Sept.,1861 and was known as the “ Washington Grays”. This unmarked medal is 10 k gold as indicated by it's specific gravity of 10.46-10.5 and weighs 11.66 grams which is equal to .1562 oz pure gold content. This is an unsigned jeweler made multi-piece medal made with green and red gold. The suspension broach is engraved “RECRUITING”. The center of the medal within the green gold wreath is engraved “47/ I / N. G.” in three lines. The entire assembly is about 68 mm tall and 35 mm wide across the broach.
