Kind of a puzzling box I found today. It’s a wonderfully carved camphor box made by a company I’m having trouble finding any info on. The outside is heavily carved with traditional Chinese themes. The inside of the lid has a stamp of the Yu Wo Cheong manufacture Camphor Wooden Trunk from No.707 (business number or address) Shanghai Street. Kowloon Hong Kong China. And has measurements 8”x4”x3 1/2”. Has metal hardware as well. Does anyone have any info on this company? I want to date it early to mid 20th century.

well real cinnamon camphora is expensive because it is used for furniture and you need bug chunks, and in the affordable the possible lining and the veneer ought to be compatble,
as far as i know it is banned a long time ago but at least is higly discouraged
so the best camphora is almost never used for tiny pieces and IMO 9 out 10 are just veneer
well you known the legeslation made in china , by now , but apart from that there is IMO no bilingual references about manufacturing ,or very
early republic
well the depicting is simple , well there is nothing wrong with if you b haven, got deep pocket
cisele is shallow and angular, but the most worrying is the use of mass production clasp,
what also is a pity , it has, it not been pimped, imo it is desirable to put in some more work
the absence of YINYING , ( the art of emphazi sing shaging is dearly missed it almost got the same tonality in your piece , and the of line seed oil , which actually cost a nickle and a dime, could create a more pronounced distantion
i wonder if it used as a YU -TING, which is used for affordablegifts, got a meaning of something like happines lot of luck etc
personnaly this is made around 1970 it is cute, but let,s put it mildly , quite afforable
typo YINYING IS SHADING
The mid century ones were mainly made in Canada and the U.S. My mother bought some in 1953 from B.C., Canada. The Chinese version came out late 20th century to 21'st century.
