This was a super lucky find in a local op shop today for just $6!
I have long hoped to find a piece of Art Nouveau glass in an op shop as a true sleeper. At last my wish came true!
The vase is made from a single thick layer of deep emerald green glass with a slightly iridescent satin finish. It measures 17.4 cm tall, 5 cm across the square top rim, & 6 cm across the base.
It has a square section with a slight twist towards the base. There is a small, neatly polished out pontil mark underneath. Enlivening the severe geometric form is dramatic gilt decoration of abstract loops - the Art Nouveau "whiplash". The gilding is in perfect condition, thick, & quite raised from the surface. Top rim is also highlighted with gilding.
I feel this vase just might be an example of Secessionist style glass by Riedel.
Bohemian origin, circa 1900.
Wow, what a bargain for such a beautiful vase!!!
Many thanks, Scott!
I feel I was very lucky to find this...especially at the price.
so art nouveau adore the contrast between the right lines of the glass shape with the ondulant ones of the decoration
Thanks also, kivatinitz!
as far as i can see it is a hell of a piece , looks like Secessionisme without gullblomster ( which is out ), i am not expert , it is stripped to the basics IMO if i am right i highly prefer this one , FAR OUT
it is not in the catalogue , maybe some kind of rogue, well i don,t give a F,,,, it is superb
Many thanks, apostata, much appreciated!
I had never seen anything like this vase in person before, & once I grabbed it & hurried to the counter to pay for it, I speculated on a maker. Riedel came to mind as I'd seen several examples of square - sectioned vases with Secessionist decoration. But as you said, this one is simpler, more severe (which I like a whole lot).
Have not been able to find any vases exactly the same online as this one. I rather enjoy the thought of it being a "rogue", too. Rare & different glass is always interesting to me...
Warren wil know this , he got the wole Georg Höltl set ,likely i only got the catalogi, and i mainly sell Daum and Palda , and Warren is far more skilled then me
