Pvt Landon Montgomery enlisted in AUG 1862 in Company B of the 114th Ohio Infantry.
His regiment saw service in the Western theater and fought at Chickasaw Bayou, MS and Vicksburg along with several smaller engagements.
The 114th lost 39 officers and men in battle and an additional 270 from disease. These high numbers of non battle casualties was not unusual for regiments that served for long periods in the deep South.
Pvt Montgomery was one of the lucky ones. He was mustered out with the regiment in Houston, TX in JUL 1865.
In this CDV, Montgomery has signed his name to the front and twice on the back along with a presentation: "This I present to my dear wife hoping that it will please you".
At the bottom he adds "When this you see remember me".
The image is not backmarked and most likely represents the work of a Southern photographer in 1864 or 1865.

Civil War photographs are actually fairly common (desirability among collectors drives prices high enough that many folks think they are all rare).
The poetic/ sentimental inscription is what makes this particular Civil War image unusual.

i don't think that it's necessarily a bible. at that time, people who were able to read and write were often photographed w/ a book just to illustrate that fact. it was not as common as you'd think. i think he looks a bit shell-shocked.

This image was made with a particular purpose of presentation to his wife (who would have been well aware of his literacy)-- it may not be a bible but probably was something significant to both him and his wife. Maybe it was a book that she sent to him?
