Hello friends! After a long, mostly self-imposed wait this one finally arrived, and I am very, very happy to be the new owner of this fabulous Loetz Titania silver-overlay vase from about 1905-1906. The color is what I believe is called (auf Deutsch) orangeopal mit grün. I can't figure out the genre exactly, but I believe it is either 2434 or 4212, and I also believe it was designed by Leopold Bauer (first name?). I am sure the experts will correct me there, if necessary, but as we know this is 100% Loetz, because they were the ONLY ones that made Titania, and it is unique to them.
This one has wonderful silver-overlay, which is marked "sterling", and is probably by Gorham but could be Alvin. The detail on the silver is very fine, with leaves and vines that create a 4-point crown on the top 1/4 of the vase. The colors are amazing; the orange glass is the inside layer, cased with green and silver waves of iridescent leaves that have the color and sparkle of Christmas ribbons. I have never seen anything like it. The green and silver leaves/threads/waves were probably done with a method often called "pulled-feather" or "hooked", but Loetz took it to the limit with Titania, and no one has been able to duplicate it since (as far as I know).

The closest match to this shape I was able to find in the Series II book is 1906 II-4365, which refers to PMC IV, p.99 plate IV.155 which looks pretty close to me as far as the form number. The photo in Series II doesn't list any decors, but does say that II-3881 "with applied rim" is from the same form. II-3881 only lists Melusin, Metallin, Titania opal mit blattgrün Gre. 5032 for decors.
Very nice Loetz Titania Vase...the Silver-overlay gives it even more class. I posted a larger Loetz Titania Dunkleblau Mit Margrum vase on this website a while ago but it didn't have the Silver Overlay. RER (BOB) LOUMANAL

Having the time span helps a lot, instead of flipping through 903 pages, I was able to find it within about 50 pages.

While they didn't make Titania *exactly* Riedel did have a metal glass that looks very like the Loetz style glass. You'd never mistake it for something like this piece. But if you saw a piece the mind would go to Loetz first as it does really look like some sort of variant. I think I saw three or for variants of decor in Passau and Gablonz, but it was all much much simpler in style than Titania.
I am new to this site but I must say that your collection is absolutely stunning! I have never been too much interested in glass but after seeing some of your pieces I changed my mind. From now on I will keep my eyes open for these beauties. By the way, Leopold is a first name and used to be very popular in Austria; Bauer, the last name, means "farmer". Orangeopal mit gruen is the perfect description for your vase: opalescent orange colour with green. Magnificent!

BTW - I'm leaning more towards Alvin or maybe even an unknown British firm for the overlay.
I have the same vase without the silver. Love Titania. Did we all see the red and silver one on Ebay ? I quit bidding after $4000.
Thanks Jeff, I think Alvin is more likely, and unknown English definitely a possibility. Gorham usually is marked with a lion, and I don't see one.

Hi again. Actually Freiheit means freedom or liberty. Something that is very dear to my heart after escaping from communist East Germany in 1985, before the fall of the "Wall" or the "Iron Coutain". Well, I found both in Canada. Hope it stays that way :)
By the way, you were close with your translation, Freizeit means free time or spare time. I meant Freiheit. Also to clarify: I found both, freedom and liberty:)

The decoration is indeed "Orange mit Blattgrün" I owned exact same vase one year ago. My guess for the the decoration is Titania Genres 4212. For the blueprint, you can find it in Ricke, Ploil; Loetz Band 2, Seite 175, Nr. 4365 as said before. Mine measured 19cm or 7 1/3". It is a very beautiful vase, I enjoyed mine a lot, congratulation.
I too was bidding on the red and silver one, has anyone found out any designer or specialitys except the exceptional decoration?

I would like to know more about the red and silver one; it was listed as Genre 6388, which I have no reference of either. I have seen one or two others with similar colors and decor, but that one has it all! (except silver overlay, which it doesn't need!) I wonder if someone we know nabbed it? I'm waiting patiently for that posting. :)
Here's what I found on the red one. I found the exact shape in the Series II book, but slightly different size. 1907 II-5259 (163mm, the one in the auction is 180mm). It doesn't list Phänomen gre 6388 as a decor in which it was made. But later on in 1909 there is a span of Production Numbers that includes 6388: II-6384 to II-6392. None of these shapes are similar to the one in question, but it is very possible they took an earlier shape and used it for this decor. The Neue Gallery (Hatje Cantz) book that is mentioned in the auction shows a piece in this decor, although different colors. From what I see the decor is most likely "maigrün mit kaiserrot".
I agree "Maigrün mit Kaiserrot" (means may green with emperor red) is definately the correct color of the decoration but still I have not found the correct Titania Gre. I guess we both found out the exact same thing, I was really eager to get it and was with it until 6,5k because of the unusual colors.
The suggested decor (genre) number is correct: 6388 according the photo on p. 194 and p.315 of the Cantz book. It is also in Lötz band I on p.227 and p.340.
I've got to get that Cantz book! Anyone got a spare?

I wish I had bought a dozen of them when they came out. They were cheap enough, especially for those of us that had already dished out big bucks for the German version years before. All I can say is set up an eBay search for it, with email notices so you'll know if one shows up. And check Amazon from time to time. There is always one for sale for several hundred dollars, but hey, if you spend that much on one vase, it wouldn't be a bad idea to spend that much on a book.

I did see on LA where someone got BOTH Neuwirth editions & a Cantz for less than 200! What a bargain that was!
You can always find the Neuwirth books at reasonable prices. They have nice pictures, but not an awful lot of useful information for collectors.
Yes, I have the first edition, but for some reason the second one has been expensive on eBay. And yes, they aren't a lot of help for us, except the pictures are very nice. Thanks!
I have a vase similar to yours ... but it's clear crystal with silver overlay and has initials on the front. I took it to the Antique Road Show and I was told it was worth $600.00 .... but I wouldn't sell it for that. I found it at an attic sale ... and bought for $2.50. LOL

I would suggest trying the german Amazon site for the Hatje Cantz book, these are in german but there is always one on sale.
