A few days ago there was a nice Alien Czech vase shown. There was a question about it being a lamp. Here are a few pictures of two lamps: one made into a lamp and the other made to be a lamp. Note on the first one that the hole is rough. It would have been hard to drill a hole and be neat about it. The pottery is a little too brittle to make a nice clean natural looking hole. Look at the inside too. The other lamp was made to be a lamp and the hole is part of the mold. The last picture shows a typical cap that was used to make a vase into a lamp. It is likely the vase had such a cap originally. It is not too uncomon for a previous owner to prefer it to be a vase (or vice versa). Having said this, the same basic designs will often show up as both a vase and a lamp. The hole is the only difference.
