The photo album is red and has 50 pictures inside. I found a few pictures of a soldiers. One soldier in particular on his hat it shows US. All the rest of pictures must be of the family and relatives. Some of the photos are tin. One month later...When I first listed this album I had no clue who the officer was. After putting the album on CollectorsWeekly a certain individual who had seen it thought to himself, I know this person in the photo. He ask me to take a better picture. By him asking me to do that, I started taking a few photos out of the album. Well when I took out the photo of the officer, it was on the photo US Grant. I couldn't believe it. That album has been sitting on my table ever since I bought it almost 15 years ago. I want to thank this individual for all his help. I want to thank all the people on this site that go out of there way to help others! CollectorsWeekly Rocks!!!!!

It is a nice find, congrats. The sad part of these old photo albums is that no one ever thought to put names and places on the back of the photos. I hope your's does have some family names inside, it would be interesting to find out just who that soldier was.
    4. officialfuel officialfuel, 14 years ago
YardSaleDave there are some names on some of the pictures but I would'nt know where to start. Thanks.

Thank you PassingFancy and thank you kerry10456 for the interest into a new field of collecting.

It is actually fairly common to find images of famous folks in a Civil War carte de visite (CDV) album and rarely implies a family connection to the subject.

CDVs of the famous were produced in high numbers and collected-- they were the "baseball cards" of the era.

Lincoln, Mrs. Lincoln, Grant, and McClellan are probably the most commonly found subjects.

An obscure Brigadier General might indicate a particular Regimental affiliation of a soldier who is also in the album.

Hmmm ... somehow I missed this when originally posted. Nice album design.
    76. rniederman rniederman, 12 years ago
Hopefully I will post more photos in the near future; there are still some interesting cabs and CDVs to pop on CW, but I don't have any albums. And ... I just finished negotiating the acquisition of a small 1880s American wood & brass view camera outfit as well as six intriguing images; of which several are pictures of photographers posing with their cameras. One image (in particular) is actually a large, multi-image cabinet card (at least it appears to be) with an array of 36 small 'gem' photos of a nude female study (tasteful poses though).
    77. scottvez scottvez, 12 years ago
I look forward to seeing the images-- esp. the photographers!

I have several and they always command a lot of interest (and usually corresponding high prices).

Great photo of Grant. I recognized who it was instantly. When Grant was running president the photo studio cranked out thousands of copies of this photo and most of them haven't survived the test of time. I bought a photo of an Indian chief for $7 at a junk store in Oklahoma and resold it for over $700. I am sure you could get the same results with Grant's photo. Again beautiful photo.
    112. scottvez scottvez, 7 years ago
This particular Grant image is lithographic and doesn't command the same monetary interest as "photographic" views. Large numbers are out there-- it seems that many families put a Grant view into their photograph albums.

Many photographic views of Grant can be found for less than $100.
