I mentioned the cheap gasoline price at my dad’s truck stop when I commented on a post by Rattletrap, then Trey asked me to post a picture of the place. So here it is: a picture of a picture so the quality isn’t the greatest.

In 1962, when this picture was made, the concept of a truck stop with at short order food counter open 24 hours was a new concept in this part of Georgia.
This was one of several Phillips66 stations that my dad managed simultaneously…..he was always on the go; checking up, counting money, hiring guys to pump gas, wash your windshield, check your oil, and treat the customers right.

Lots of high school boys worked for him….many times just to earn enough for a special date and gas money. He would hire them but many times he would tell them to go get a haircut, tuck in their shirt, put on a belt and come back ready to work.
Payday was Monday, in cash. His theory was if he paid before the weekend, nobody would show up to work on the weekend since they would be out spending their wages.
I’ve digressed! Back to the truck stop picture:

A “truck stop” apparently was a big enough deal for getting this aerial photograph made.

This was along highway 41, a 2-lane highway running N/S …..it was the main thoroughfare to get travelers to Florida or “up North”, as we would say.

My mother baked pies in our kitchen at home for Daddy to sell by the slice at the food counter.
She made crusts from scratch, custard fillings and merengue from scratch.
Our kitchen table would be totally covered with pies which my sister and I knew not to touch.
Chocolate, coconut, lemon were some of her favorites to bake; merengue would be piled high with pretty swirls and peaks on all of them.

At the edge of the last picture, you can barely see the Phillips66 sign.
On the second picture, there’s a billboard with the gas price. I had to use a magnifying glass to see the price: 26 cents.
There are some other signs placed near the road which probably advertised the diesel price.
The truck by the pumps reveal which pumps were for diesel.

The pumps are long gone but the building remains….it’s still a busy establishment: a fruit/vegetable market where I shop regularly.

Thanks for taking a look. And thanks to Trey for the request to show this.
    Comments always welcome and appreciated!

Izenglish,The good ol’ days, for sure….>sigh<
The pay rate seems so low now, by comparison but prices were way lower so it all worked out pretty well.
Thanks for the love and the comment. :^)

PhilDMorris, thanks for leaving a comment and a love. It saddens me to know that family history just vanishes as we senior members die off.
I hope someday my descendants will look thru all my albums and say, “Grandmother did that!?”

I try to retell stories of my dad’s adventures but I can’t tell them like he did….I asked many times for him to let me record and transcribe his stories for future generations but he wouldn’t do it…many of those stories related to moonshiners and bootleggers (of which he was one) and he said he was afraid he’d get people in trouble (even tho most or all were long dead). The man could really keep secrets!

SEAN68, thanks for the love and comment!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to find it suddenly 26 cents at gallon? I can’t think of anything that costs only 26 cents nowadays.

Ralph, you probably have passed that building many times—any maybe even shopped there…..it’s now Burger’s Market on Hwy 41. :^)
