After caps were removed from the mandatory uniform list there was a period with no official headwear. As part of the 2002 uniform review a new optional baseball cap was introduced to go with the new polo shirt and hoody, which were added as new items in an attempt to modernise the Cubs uniform. The time line of which one came first is very muddy and the Scout Shop seems to have stocked different ones on and off at different times. As they were not compulsory it didn't matter which one Cubs wore. There is also a dark navy blue one I don't have which I think was the first one made. Then came the ones with paw prints. The plain one is the one currently being sold.
I'm not too keen on the paw prints but I think the kids like them. I do like the little detail of the metal tab on the back which also has the paw print on it.
Yes I think it seems things do get worse over time. No offense to the paw prints.
