Nice Singer sewing machine. Model Y 6286538 not sure if this was made in 1922 or 1928. Maybe it is newer not sure.

Per the serial number tables at the International Sewing Machine Collectors' Society (ISMACS) website, serial number Y6286538 was one of a block of 10,000 consecutive serial numbers ([Y]6277395 through [Y]6287394) that was allotted to Singer's Kilbowie factory November 29 1928, and all were intended to be stamped into the beds of model 99K sewing machine heads:
Y- 6277395 6287394 99K 10000 November 29 1928
Y- 6307495 6307594 99K 100 Dec 26 1928 REN
Y- 6928711 6958710 99K 30000 March 26 1929

Singer allotted another small block of numbers (100) to Kilbowie for model 99K on Decenber 26 1928 (dunno what that "REN" is in the Notes column), and then there wasn't another allotment for model 99K sewing machine heads until March of 1929.
So, I suppose it's possible that your sewing machine head didn't roll off of the assembly line until the first quarter of 1929.

A quick visual way to distinguish between the model 99 and its full size sibling the model 66 is the position of the Singer badge on the pillar (it's mounted lower on the 99):

I suspect that your model 99 is a submodel 99-16 or 99-17, and manuals for those submodels seem to be like hen's teeth, so I'll give you links to manuals for the 99-13 and the 99-24:
