A fairly uncommon item this is a canvas sheath for an axe. This would be US Army (or Marine) issue as it has the connector for a web belt as seen on photo #3. Plus it is marked U. S. There is rinting on the back which is difficult to read. I think it is the name of the company that made it with 1945 underneath.
I am thinking this would be carried by an engineer as a regular infantry man would not want to carry something this heavy. Either that or someone who had a ride.
The axe here is not army issue but is the right shape and size.
