From the recent estate. This rare lacquered box has distinctive styling of those made on the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. Also known as the Nansei Island on Okinawa. This beautifully painted writing box or document box is 12”x12”x1.5” has a good amount of use to it. The front has a wonderful landscape of a lake town, with large amounts of water surrounding it. People on boats, fishing and hanging out. The hardware is well worn but still functions properly. I’d like to say it's Edo period. Could be 17th - early 19th century. The kingdom of RyuKyu was dismantled after being annexed by the Japanese in the late 1870’s. The inside is inscribed with lines of kanji. If anyone can decipher it I’d be really intrigued. The inside area is sectioned off to hold varies objects. There’s a similar Lidded box With river landscape Ryukyu islands in the collection of Sir Harry Garner. The box has some wear to the paints and hardware. And a couple knicks near the bottom of the front artwork. But honestly pretty good condition for lacquerware.
